A2 westbound Dunkirk slip closed overnight for resurfacing works

A planned overnight closure on the A2 at the Dunkirk exit is part of a long-running National Highways resurfacing scheme running into spring, with marked diversions in place.

An overnight closure of the A2 westbound exit slip road near Dunkirk, flagged by Wayne Conyers' monitoring instruments as active until 6am tomorrow, forms part of a scheduled programme of resurfacing works on the carriageway between Boughton-under-Blean and Wincheap, according to [1]. The closure affects the slip road at a minor junction between the A2050 near Canterbury and the M2, in the stretch covering Brenley, Boughton and Dunkirk. National Highways has advised residents needing access to the village to use alternative routes via Brenley Lane, Nine Ash Lane or Staplestreet while the works are under way, according to [1]. Staplestreet itself is only partly open: the Thanet Way end is subject to a manned closure specifically to stop HGVs from using it as a cut-through, according to [1]. The wider context is a repair programme on the A2 coastbound carriageway between Boughton-under-Blean and Wincheap, running from M2 junction 7 at Brenley Corner through to Wincheap. According to [1], this involves overnight closures from Thursday to Monday each week, between 8pm and 6am, alongside daytime lane closures on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with a 50mph limit imposed on the coastbound carriageway during those periods. The overnight closures began on Thursday 5 February and are scheduled to run through to Monday 23 March, according to [1] — meaning the slip road closure Wayne's instruments picked up tonight sits within a roughly seven-week window of recurring works, not an isolated one-off. For residents with properties that have direct access to the A2 within the closed section, National Highways says an escort will be provided; drivers in that position are told to approach the closure gate at Brenley Corner, according to [1]. Diversions have been set out for through-traffic. Those heading towards Wincheap are routed from M2 junction 7 (Brenley Corner) via the A299 Thanet Way, the A253 and the A28 before rejoining the A2 at Wincheap. Traffic bound for Dover is diverted from Brenley Corner via the A299 Thanet Way and the A256 to rejoin the A2 further on, according to [1]. Further detail is available via National Highways' south-east maintenance webpage, under the heading "A2 Boughton Dunkirk resurfacing works", or by phone on 0300 123 5000, according to [1]. There is nothing in the material to suggest anything beyond a routine, publicly announced roadworks programme: the timings, diversions and access arrangements are all pre-planned and consistent with the scheme description. The slip road closure flagged tonight appears to be a normal part of that recurring Thursday-to-Monday overnight pattern rather than a new or unexpected development. What to watch: whether the Thursday-to-Monday overnight closure pattern holds through to the stated completion date of 23 March, or whether National Highways issues any revision to the schedule or diversion routes before then.
