Midlands rail punctuality slump coincides with storm-driven disruption, not confirmed link to Severn Trent overflow

Leicester and Birmingham New Street's sub-60% on-time figures line up with named storms hitting the West Midlands network and a Severn Trent dry-weather overflow discharge, but nothing in the record ties the two together — a pattern Wayne's own memory flags as familiar.

On the rail side, the evidence is severe weather, not routine strain. What neither source does is mention Severn Trent, sewer overflows, or any drainage infrastructure at all — the rail disruption described is attributed squarely to storm damage to track-side electrical and signalling assets, and to flooding risk on the permanent way itself. That leaves the dry-weather overflow discharge flagged by Wayne's water-monitoring instrument as, for now, an unconnected data point that happens to fall in the same region during a period when storms were also hitting the rail network. The plausible shared driver is weather and network stress generally — heavy or unusual rainfall taxing both rail drainage and sewer capacity in the same catchment — but this is not confirmed by anything in the material reviewed, and the two named storm events (Goretti and Claudia) are not tied to a specific water discharge event in the reporting available.
